Michael Jhin

Michael Jhin was born and raised in Hong Kong until the age of eight when his family immigrated to America - Brooklyn to be precise. Michael survived Brooklyn and NYC to then live out, and thrive in, his immigrant American dream. He came to Notre Dame to be a “trailing supporting spouse” while his wife Susan was an ILI fellow, only to be converted to a Spousal Associate as the ILI program continues to evolve. Now they will both continue to grow and learn at the university which all three of their children attended and loved, so that maybe their kids would stop thinking they’re smarter than their parents.

After fourteen fulfilling years with the St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System (Houston, Texas) as its President & CEO, Michael retired and was named CEO Emeritus. The System was an enterprise of $1 billion in annual operations with over 7,400 employees. It was recognized by Fortune Magazine in 2003 for the second time as one of the nation’s 100 best companies for which to work and was one of only four U.S. non-profit health organizations recognized. The Hospital was also recognized as a Magnet Hospital for its compassionate and unexcelled nursing care; it is one of only eighty-two (of 6,000 U.S. hospitals) and the first hospital in Texas so designated.

Michael has devoted his entire career to recapturing the “care” and “health” (vs. “illness”) in American “healthcare.” An industry leader in advocating fuller community stewardship, Michael believes in mission performance as well as corporate performance. He led the creation of the first-of-its-kind St. Luke’s Episcopal Health Charities for the purpose of significantly expanding its mission investments in, and impact on, the health of all Houstonians.

Michael Jhin has long had a passion for healthcare and the industry’s ability to help and heal people of all ages. He actively contributes to not-for-profit as well as corporate boards, both locally and nationally.
